Around the country, many businesses, most of them certificate holders, celebrated FSC Friday on the 26th September. FSC Friday is celebrated by a variety of different organisations, from primary schools to saw-mills to construction firms and many use it as a chance to increase employees’ and customers’ awareness of the FSC system. It’s always a pleasure to see the different ways organisations choose to get involved, including these two excellent examples:
Simons Group
We started ‘growing’ our ‘Building Greener’ tree for FSC Friday 2013, asking employees to pledge to be sustainable in just one simple, realistic way. Every leaf is an employee’s commitment or proof of various ‘Building Greener’ events over the year. This year, not only are we asking employees to pledge again, but we held a bird box competition for families over the summer holidays and asked local upcycling artist Jez Armstrong and Paul Bennett of RSPB were judges for us. The winning entry receives £100 of high street vouchers, with runners up receiving FSC products.
- Special thanks to Izy Hodgkinson and Dr Rosi Fieldson of Simons Group for making this happen!
Be Modern
Be Modern, a UK based manufacturer of fires and fireplaces worked in partnership with leading local Housing Association Gentoo to celebrate ‘FSC® Friday’ this September.
Alongside Gentoo, Be Modern visited St. Aiden’s Catholic Academy in Sunderland to take part in a special educational lesson dedicated to FSC Friday.
The Academy runs a syllabus in collaboration with Gentoo focussing on working within their environment and the importance of sustainable resources.
Six students were selected to help to plant apple trees, donated by Be Modern, as part of their ‘incredible edible’ garden and then were presented with a plaque dedicating them to FSC. The students were filled with enthusiasm for the hands on activities and listened carefully as they were taught about planting and the importance of natural resources and sustainability.
The lesson was a huge success and the Academy now has 5 new apple trees to mark their commitment to raising awareness of FSC.
- Special thanks to Sarah Robson of Be Modern for letting us know about this excellent event!
FSC Friday 2015 will be on the 25th September and all businesses are encouraged to get involved in any way they can. Resources will be advertised nearer the date.
