Christmas is a time when we bring the forest into our homes not just in the form of Christmas trees or sprigs of holly and ivy but also in a less obvious one – paper.

Whether in the form of cards, gift tags, wrapping paper or even paper garlands, we get through a huge amount of it over the festive season.

But is this helping or harming the world’s forests?

The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) is an international, non-governmental organisation dedicated to promoting responsible management of the world’s forests. FSC helps take care of forests and the people and wildlife who call them home.

FSC certified products are made with material from responsibly-managed, FSC certified forests and/or recycled materials. FSC certified cards, wrap and more are available from a wide variety of suppliers.

FSC certified Christmas cards and wrapping paper are are also available from many supermarkets and retailers.

Sainsbury's recycling

Once the big day’s over you can even put your old Christmas cards and paper wrapping to good use by recycling them at Sainsbury’s stores to support FSC UK. Look out for the special recycling bins in store between Boxing Day and 9th January. Sainsbury’s will not only recycle the cards but will also make a donation to FSC UK based on the volume of cards collected.
