FSC certified tree-fiber fabrics have entered the fashion industry in a big way, and their popularity is proving that environmental awareness is in style. A statement released by H&M confirmed that they “will focus on building traceable and sustainable production of these fabrics in our own supply chain, and in doing so will inspire others in the fashion industry.”
Tree-fibers from FSC certified forests are made from sustainable and renewable resources. TENCEL® and MONOCEL® are made of FSC certified eucalyptus and bamboo respectively. They are soft, lightweight and are optimal for jerseys, knits and woven fashion garments.
FSC Key Account Manager, Janeth Pineda, believes that tree-fibers sourced from responsibly managed forests are good for both the environment and the business community. “These are exciting new developments,” she said, “and FSC is definitely interested in helping facilitate companies’ access to sustainable sources.”
H&M’s commitment towards FSC certified fabrics follows their 2010 sustainable paper policy, which states that all paper and paper products made from fiber originating in a country with tropical rainforest must be FSC certified. All H&M receipt rolls are FSC certified and the H&M Magazine is printed on FSC certified paper. H&M seeks to increase the global use of FSC certified paper and to ensure that their paper comes from a sustainable source.
H&M hold an international FSC trademark license FSC-N001961.
