Christmas trees

Being FSC, where else would we begin? With all the inevitability of repeats of Love Actually or a row about Brussels sprouts, a debate about the comparative merits of natural and artificial trees has come to be expected every Christmas now.

Last year, we made the case for keeping it real at Christmas: the natural pine scents, the authentic look and feel, 100% recyclability and supporting the rural economy. When you buy an FSC-certified Christmas tree, you know that your tree has been grown and cared for responsibly.

FSC-certified growers in the UK include:

Forestry Commission England (FSC® C123214) and Forestry Commission Scotland (FSC® C123223) hold FSC certification and sell real Christmas trees at various locations in England and Scotland, though it will depend on the individual location whether the trees on sale are FSC-certified – as with any product, look out for the FSC logo to be sure.

If you decide to buy an artificial tree instead, we recommend buying one made from recyclable materials. Also, if it is made from wood or a wood product such as plywood, always make sure it carries the FSC logo.

Finally, don’t forget to look out for FSC-certified wooden decorations for your tree!

Christmas cards and gift wrap

Have you sent all your Christmas cards yet? Royal Mail recommends posting before Tuesday 18 December to make sure they arrive in time. The great news is that postage stamps are FSC-certified and labelled!

FSC-certified Christmas cards and gift wrap are available from many high street retailers including Coop, John Lewis and M&S, or you could support a good cause this Christmas by buying your FSC-certified cards directly from one of these charities:

Toys and trinkets

With many British consumers increasingly concerned that plastic isn’t so fantastic, environmentally conscious shoppers will be looking for alternatives to fill stockings and decorate homes this Christmas. The great news is that there are so many FSC-certified products on the market that you’ll be spoiled for choice!

We can’t promise a partridge in an FSC-certified pear tree but here are some of the FSC-certified items on our list for Santa – one for each of the 12 days of Christmas:
