If you’ve been at one of a few major sporting events over the last two years you may have seen a man in a union-jack hat and a red and blue jacket taking centre stage. Described as a ‘deforestation activist’, Jungle Bird decided to raise awareness of deforestation and illegal logging through video-bombing – essentially getting free publicity by getting on camera at major sporting occasions.
You can see some of the videos of his appearances here: http://www.junglebird.org/jungle-bird-in-action/
Andrew Dudley, the man behind Jungle Bird, is from Liverpool in the UK, so we were extremely happy to find out that he supports the FSC certification system as a way to protect forests. Indeed, one of his 5 top tips to reduce deforestation is to ‘Insist on paper and wood from FSC approved sources’.
Jungle Bird only appears when the sporting event is not ‘in play’ and willingly accepts arrest when the security guards eventually catch up with him. His brand of non-violent protest and awareness raising is helping to highlight the problems of deforestation and the joint goals of sustainable forestry and reforestation to a wide audience. He recently presented to Greenpeace in the US.
Together, on FSC Friday, we are proud to launch this campaign, aimed at getting people to look for the FSC logo when they buy toilet paper. Many brands have it, just make sure that next time you’re in the shops, you look for the FSC logo and so help prevent deforestation.
